Selma High School has a new football coach.
The school has hired Willie Gandy as the next football coach. Gandy replaces Christopher Raymond, who resigned to become coach at LeFlore High School in Mobile.
Gandy, who was defensive coordinator at Linden High School last year, said he’s ready for his first head coaching gig.
“I always wanted to be a head coach,” Gandy said. “This is the perfect opportunity. I’m excited about it.”
The Saints finished 3-7 in 2018, but Gandy believes he can reverse the Saints’ losing skid.
“I’m looking forward to going there and turn the program around,” Gandy said. “I believe I’m the right guy for the job.”
Gandy said he’s been working with the Saints players for three weeks when the school board approved his hiring.
Gandy inherits Dallas County’s top college football prospect, offensive lineman Jeremiah Wright. The 6-foot-5, 320-pound Wright has Division I scholarship offers that include Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia Tech and Troy.
“Selma has a lot of good athletes,” Gandy said.
