Keith High guard Arayvion Jones’ mind was consumed with basketball the entire summer.
Jones played in the North-South All-Star basketball and travelled with his AAU squad during summer vacation.
The 6-foot-3 Jones only scored two points in the South’s victory, but he viewed the contest as an opportunity to grow.
“It was great playing with people from different schools,” Jones said. “I got a lot of experience participating. I learned how to share the ball with experienced players.”
Jones was a finalist for The Selma Times-Journal’s Boys basketball player of the year last season. He averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds a game, earning third-team All-State honors by the Alabama Sportswriters Association (ASWA). Jones was also MVP of the Dallas County Schools Basketball Tournament, which the Bears beat Selma High in the finals.
Jones has set team and individual goals for his final season at Keith High. The Bears won their state title in 1998.
“My goal is to make my teammates better and be a better leader,” Jones said. “I want to earn Division I scholarship offers. I want to play hard and go out with a bang.”
Wallace Community College-Selma and Shelton State Community College both have expressed interest in Jones. He said no D-I program has contacted him.
Jones, who plays for Selma One AAU team, said he has fine-tuned his game.
“I’m more mature this year and my shooting has improved,” Jones said.
