Coaching high school football has always run through the bloodlines of Robert Gartman.

Gartman was recently hired as the assistant head football coach at Meadowview Christian School. Bob Taylor is MCS’ head coach and the school’s headmaster.

The 63-year-old Gartman said he’s trying to familarize himself with the Trojans.

“I’m looking forward to knowing the kids’ names,” Gartman said. “I’m tremendously excited about it. I look forward to working with Coach Taylor. He is a fine man.”

Taylor said Gartman will handle the day to day operations of the Trojans’ football program.

Gartman is best known in Dallas County for his two stints as head coach at Morgan Academy.  Between 1985 and 1992, he guided the Senators to six AISA state championships: 1988, 1989, 1991 and 1992. He went 91-10 in his first stint with the Senators.

After coaching at Wilcox Academy for five years and winning a state title in 1996, Gartman returned to Morgan Academy for the 2001 season.

Gartman went 55-36 between 2001 and 2008, including state titles in 2003 and 2005.

Overall, Gartman has a 242-91 record with seven state titles in 28 seasons as a head coach.

The Mobile native also played four seasons at Alabama under legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1974-1977.

“Playing for Bear Bryant was like being in church,” Gartman joked.

Gartman received a degree in coaching and spent a year student teaching at Holt High School in Tuscaloosa.
