Despite the presence of workers and equipment around the historic St. James Hotel in downtown Selma over the past several weeks, few details are available on exactly what work is taking place inside the building.
The building was purchased by Rhaglan Hospitality earlier this year and work began shortly thereafter.
Jim Lewis, Rhaglan Hospitality Chief Executive Officer (CEO), brought Tom Clark on to oversee the project.
For his part, Clark describes his role as that of a consultant, overseeing design and construction aspects of the project.
According to Clark, work on the hotel is “going well” and there have so far been “no issues.”
Clark, however, was hesitant to provide any details about what work is being done and what the next steps are in the project.
Lewis has not responded to multiple interview requests.
Similarly, Selma City Council President Corey Bowie has little information on what work is being done inside the building, but is optimistic that it is “moving at a fast pace.”
“I’m very pleased with the progress that they’re making at the St. James Hotel,” Bowie said. “I feel that with the progress they’re making, it’s going to be really good for the downtown area.”
