Selma City Councilman Michael Johnson will be hosting a Fishing Tournament on Labor Day weekend.
The tournament will be held Aug. 31 from 7 a.m. until noon at the East Selma Fishing Pond, located on Plant Street and Hardy Avenue.
Johnson said cost for the five-hour tournament is free and will include two categories: biggest catch and most catches. Johnson said a third category could be added by the time the tournament rollls around. First and second place trophies will also be awarded.
“I’m very excited about the tournament,” Johnson said. “I wanted to give the Selma residents something to do. We’ve had a good year fishing. We’ve had a big year on catfish.”
Johnson said the tournament is held each year under different names, but its his first time getting to run the event. In the past, the East Selma Fishing Pond has hosted a kid’s rodeo and other big-time tournaments.
The East Selma Pond is usually stocked with catfish and tilapia. Bream and grass carp are also found in the pond.
Johnson said he anticipates a strong turnout, especially the tournament falling on the last federal holiday until Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving Day in November.
