Jannie Venter celebrates her 46th year as a gospel radio host on Sunday.
At the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center on Sunday, Ventor will celebrate her 46 years in the radio industry with a gospel concert, featuring several performers in the Black Belt Region.
Doors open at 3 p.m. and the event will start at 3:30 p.m. Admission is $17 for guests 12 and over and $6 for guest under 12.
Venter, 78, is simply known by her listeners as the “Mother of the Airwaves.” She takes song requests from her listeners. When Venter can’t find the song, she sings it to them.
“It’s just another year where I am blessed to provide good gospel service to the sick, shut-in and people in the nursing home,” Venter said. “The ministry is not about me, but all about Jesus.”
A Selma City Councilwoman in Ward 8 from 2004 to 2008, Venter has two Sunday shows on WHBB: 9-10 a.m. and 7 p.m.-midnight.
Venter is a longtime member of the Second Missionary Baptist Church, singing in the choir and serving on the usher board. Venter’s membership includes the National Council Negro Women and AARP.
The American travelers and Ruth Black and the Harmonettes are among the regional groups scheduled to perform at the event.
Venter has two children, Thelma and Lawrence, grandmother of four and a great grandson.
