George Edwards Jr. won the Central Alabama Fair Sing-Off on Thursday at the Selma Lions Club Fairgrounds.
The Valley Grande resident captured the $500 first-place prize. Edwards sang Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” and Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me.”
“I feel good about winning,” Edwards said. “I had a fun time at the Sing-Off.”
Two Selma residents finished second and third. Leanna Johnson was second and received a prize of $200. Turkessa Murray was third and received a prize of $100.
The annual Sing-Off was put on by Dixie Country 98.5 and 100.1 FM Radio, who partnered with the Selma Lions Club and Pepsi Cola.
Sing-Off organizer Carolyn Rowell said contestants were asked to send singing samples to be chosen for the competition.
Judges for the contest were Jill Tutt of Demopolis, Andrew Swindle of Auburn and Gordon Welch of Selma.
Most of the contestants were from Dallas County. Ferrell Beard, Breanna Ennis, Leanna Johnson, Larry Taylor, Turkessa Murray and William Smith are Selma residents. George Edwards Jr., Ernie Brink and Logan Grindle reside in Valley Grande.
Other competitors were William Branch III (Forkland), Eadie Caver (Maplesville), Aaliyah Hollis (Thomasville), Kyle Ledesma (Prattville) and Ronny Overstreet (Forkland).
Dallas County Circuit Clerk Lynnethia Robinson won the event last year and did not compete this year. Robinson sang during the intermission.
