Hornets show resiliency over Raiders

The Dallas County High School Hornets fought a full four quarters Friday to get an at home win over the Greensboro Raiders Friday night.

The Hornets charged out of the gate the first drive with a 15 yard carry from Junior Quarterback Calvin Griffen, 14.
The Hornets couldn’t maintain the momentum of the first play though, turning over the football to the Raiders with 11:32 left in the first quarter.
The Hornets defense didn’t let the Raiders seize the opportunity though.
The Hornets held the Raiders off on their first offensive drive.
When the ball was back in the Hornets hands, it seemed they were in an excellent spot to score after a completed 20-yard pass from Griffen to Senior Wide Reciever Jayln Callens, 25.
The Raiders came at Griffen hard the next play though. Raider Demais Hall, 81 seized the ball right out of Griffen’s hands and ran it into the end zone, scoring the first touchdown of the evening on the Hornets own home turf.
A completed 2-point conversion put the Raiders up 8-0 with 6:54 remaining in the first quarter.

The Hornets defense kept the Raiders out of the end zone for the rest of the game, but it wasn’t until the final five minutes of the fourth quarter until they found their footing on offense and began to put points on the board.

The first score for the Hornets came with 5:01 left in the first quarter thanks to a completed pass from Griffen to Sophomore Wide Receiver Marquavious Pullom.

The next run came after a series of carries from Senior Running Back Aaron Fails, 2, eventually found him in the end zone.

The Hornets put the final nail in the Raiders’ coffin with a completed pass to Sophomore Wide Receiver Rick Tyre.

After being drenched in Gatorade by the celebrating Hornets, head coach Heath LeVert expressed his excitement about the Hornet’s win.

“It’s a win that we needed said LeVert. It puts us at 3-1 in the area and in second place in the area. It’s been a long time since we’ve been able to say that here at Dallas County and we’re excit ert said the hornets overcame their mistakes in the first quarter and showed resiliency by not allowing ed.”

LeV their turnovers to dampen their spirits.

LeVert said the Hornets found their groove on offense in the second quarter.

“It seemed like the faster we moved the more frustrated they got,” he said. “That’s one of our perks. We’re in really good shape. We practice really hard during the week. We take pride in that. We take pride in that and we move very fast.”

LeVert also commended the Hornets on the defensive side of the ball.

According to LeVert, this is the third week in a row the Hornets have stopped the other team from scoring during the second half of the football game.

“The defense stands up when they have to,” said LeVert. “They have a ‘bend but don’t break’ mentality.”
