Kourtnie Nelson, of On the Go Painting, will host a Breast Cancer Awareness Paint Party at this Saturday at Y-NOT Entertainment at 4 p.m.
Nelson has been running On the Go Painting for the past to much as a way to reconnect with her love of art.
“I’ve loved art ever since I was a kid,” she said.
Nelson previously worked for two years as an art tutor with the Edmundite Missions, but after taking a job as Chief Clerk at the Selma Police Department, Nelson didn’t have the opportunity to engage with the arts that she once did.
“I felt like it was a shame for me not to use my talent,” said Nelson.
That’s when she decided to start her new side gig with On the Go Painting.
“It’s been pretty good,” said Nelson of her new venture. “It’s taken off better than I thought it would.”
Nelson brings all of the art supplies and shows groups of children or adults how to paint a picture, Nelson even sets up and cleans all of the paints and other supplies.
Saturday’s Breast Cancer Awareness Paint Party is nelson’s way of using her love of painting to give back.
All proceeds collected from Saturday’s event will go toward the Montgomery Cancer Center.
“My dad had cancer before he passed,” said Nelson. “He traveled to Montgomery Cancer Center a lot. I wanted to do something to help out someone else.”
Nelson’s friend April Brown will also be there Saturday to share her story as a breast cancer survivor.
Admission for Saturday’s paint part is $30.
The price of admission includes a canvas and all paint materials as well as catered food and drinks.
