The Selma Chapter of The Links, Inc. hosted its “Links in Pink” event on Saturday at the Historic Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church.

The Links hosted the event in collaboration with Real Men Wear Pink, Inc. and 100 Black Men of Selma, Inc.

Attendees at Saturday’s event had the opportunity to receive breast cancer screenings, breast exams and have their blood pressure and glucose checked.

Before the screenings and exams took place, a brief ceremony was held to kick off the event.

“When The Links reached out to us about this particular service project we jumped on it immediately,” said 100 Black men of Selma, Inc. President Billy Young. “We as men understand that breast cancer effects all of us. It effects every man that has ever loved a woman. It effects every son, every uncle and it can even affect us, personally. This is a project every man, woman and child can get behind and support.”

After Young’s remarks Dr. Patricia K. Robinson, Health and Human Services facet Chair of the Selma Links, shared several facts about breast cancer.

“We have to have facts and we have to have knowledge and we have to have action,” said Robinson.

Robinson stressed that the main way to combat breast cancer is to be checked regularly and to immediately tell your doctor if you feel like something is wrong.

Frances Bumbrey, Selma Link’s Program Committee Member then shared her story as a breast cancer survivor.

Bumbrey stressed Robinson’s point about being checked for breast cancer regularly.
