Brantley Elementary School hosted a school-wide “Pink Out” on Monday morning to educate its students about breast cancer and honor the three teachers at the school who are cancer survivors.
The faculty and staff of Brantley Elementary worked Monday morning to get all of the children into the cafeteria so they could surprise first-grade teacher Katrina McGrue.
McGrue is Brantley’s most recent teacher to battle cancer, she finished her final treatment for the disease last Friday.
As McGrue headed for the cafeteria, the lights were turned off and the students and faculty became quiet.
When McGrue entered the cafeteria, the room filled with applause from the entire student body, faculty and McGrue’s own family.
Following McGrue’s welcome, the staff at Brantley delivered a brief program about breast cancer to the students.
“It’s important for them to know about this disease because some of them may have someone at home who’s going through it,” said Robin Little, a Pre-K teacher who helped with the presentation.
Teachers Margaret Crumb and Cynthia Smith were also surprised and presented with baskets along with McGrue at the end of the program.
The three women were overwhelmed by the amount of support shown from the school.
“It feels so good to know that they’re behind us,” said McGrue.
Smith was shocked by the display of support from the students and her fellow teachers.
“They got me, that’s all I can say,” she said.
Brantley continued its efforts to battle breast cancer later in the day at snack time.
The schools typical snack fare was replaced with pink snacks including pink lemonade and cotton candy.
“All the money raised from selling the snacks goes toward breast cancer awareness,” said Little.
