The Wallace Community College-Selma Women’s Basketball team is in a rebuilding stage.
WCCS opens its season against Southern Union at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at home.
Eleven of the 12 WCCS players are freshmen, which concerns Lady Patriots coach Herman Turner.
“Having a lot of freshmen will give them a chance to develop, but at the same time they’ll be inexperienced,” Turner said.
The Lady Patriots could rely heavily on two former Selma High standouts, Ta’Sharri Grimes and Aaliyah Hatcher, members of The Selma Times-Journal’s All-Dallas County girls’ basketball team.
“Grimes and Hatcher will make a great contribution, they have skills and are great athletes,” Turner said.
Grimes and Hatcher both said they’re looking forward to playing at WCCS.
“I’m not concerned about playing at a higher level against bigger competition,” Grimes said.
“I feel that we’ll have a good basketball team,” Hatcher said.
Amber Richardson is the only sophomore. Former Keith High standout Shatavia Moore was injured last year and got redshirted.
Sierra Carter, Myciah Thrash, JaNiya White, Candace Parris, Riley Barrett, Toniah Foster and Tydasia Davis are the other freshmen.
Yulonda Randolph is the assistant coach for the Lady Patriots.
Turner didn’t put huge expectations on the Lady Patriots.
“We hope to be in position and win a lot of games,” Turner said.
