The annual Selma High School Choir’s Christmas Concert is scheduled for Sunday evening at 4 p.m. – tickets for the concert can be purchased at the door for $5.
Selma High Choir Director Colin Lett said the Christmas Concert is a long-standing holiday tradition, dating back to when he was a student at Selma High.
Lett has directed the young voices of the Selma High Choir for the last six years.
During his time as director, Lett says that the Christmas Concert is the choir’s most attended event all year.
“This year’s performance is going to be an eclectic mix of Christmas standards, hymns, Negro spirituals and jazz,” said Lett. “There will be Christmas favorites, but we’re also trying to expand our cultural horizons.”
According to Lett, the Selma High Choir won’t be alone at this year’s performance.
The concert will also feature a few numbers from the Selma High Jazz Band and some songs from the Jackson High School Choir from nearby Clark County.
Lett said he and Jackson High’s Choir Director, TaDarius Dukes, a fraternity brother of Lett’s, arranged to have Jackson High’s Choir be their guest at the Alabama National Fair in Montgomery earlier this year.
For the performance’s conclusion, the Selma High Choir, Jazz band and Jackson High Choir will all perform together.
“It’s going to be an excellent performance,” said Lett.
