The Selma Art Guild (SAG) will kick off the Christmas season this weekend with two days filled with art, music and food.
The Selma Art Guild’s first day of Christmas cheer is Saturday, Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
As part of 1st Saturday Selma, the Art Guild will have two “make and take” projects for families to complete together including a snow man ornament and a Christmas tree banner.
SAG Co-President Jo Taylor says the projects are suitable for all ages and that everyone who participates will go home with a cute product to decorate their home with.
From 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, those in attendance will be able to enjoy the musical stylings of Charlie Porter, who will be playing gospel, soft jazz and Christmas favorites on his keyboard while families engage in the arts and crafts projects.
On Sunday, SAG will continue the holiday fun with its annual Christmas party and art sale from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.
Taylor says the event has become a long-standing tradition and has been going on as long as she can remember.
“The whole thing is a way to say thank you to everyone who’s supported the Selma Art Guild and the local artisans of Selma,” said Taylor.
There will be an abundance of paintings, drawings and pottery from local artists available for sale.
“Their will be lots of opportunities to look for Christmas presents,” said Taylor.
In addition to all of the local art available for purchase, Taylor says there will be plenty of “Christmas goodies”, including hot apple cider, for attendees to enjoy.
While party-goers peruse the selection of local art and enjoy their food, they’ll also be able to take in the sounds of local musician Johnny Arcero.
Arcero will play a unique mix of both blues and Christmas music Sunday afternoon.
According to Taylor, Saturday and Sunday’s musicians are possible thanks to a grant from the Alabama State Council of the Arts.
While attending the Selma Art Guild’s Christmas Party is free, the SAG asks everyone to bring a nonperishable food item for the Selma Food Bank, in the spirit of giving for the holiday season.
This year’s Christmas party will also feature photo opportunities with Santa, a first for the SAG Christmas Party.
“It’s sure to be a great time,” said Taylor.
