The Selma Chapter of The Links, Inc. held a Heart Health Fair Saturday at the Grist-Brown YMCA.
The Links partnered with Michael Johnson’s MJ 93-90 Foundation and Rural Health Medical Program, Inc. (RHMPI). The event’s theme was “Healthy Heart, Healthy You”. The Heart Health Fair was coordinated by Dr. Patricia Robinson and Phenicia Nunn.
Various Links members spent the entire three-hour event promoting a healthy lifestyle to Dallas County residents. Items ranged from having their blood pressure checked to glucose and cholesterol screenings by the RHMPI, fitness and CPR demonstrations.
The event had a strong turnout as countless local residents toured the various tables. Selma cardiologist Dr. Steven Ally delivered a keynote presentation.
Links Chapter president Dorothy C. Barnes said the event was put together to raise awareness of the risk factors associated with heart disease. February is American Heart Health Month.
“We want people in our area to change their lifestyle and make better choices,” Barnes said.
Nunn, wife of Dallas County Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn, said it’s important to maintain a healthy environment.
“Our goal is to provide information for people in our community and make them aware of heart disease,” Nunn said.
Robinson said it’s an honor being a facilitator at the event.
“We are trying to engage the community into changing their lifestyle habits that decrease their mobility and mortality,” Robinson said.
