At Thursday evening’s virtual Dallas County Schools (DCS) Board of Education Meeting, Superintendent Hattie Shelton announced Dallas County Schools was the recipient of a Meals-to-You Grant from Baylor University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Shelton said the grant was discovered by Dallas County Schools Child Nutrition Director Dr. Latonya Thrash.
Shelton said the program would be a great opportunity to provide food and nutrition to students while school is closed over the summer.
Shelton said parents must enroll their children in the program by visiting https://mealstoyou.org/emergency-meals-to-you-application/ and submitting the online application form.
Children signed up for the program will receive 10 free meals, five breakfasts and five lunches, every two weeks delivered directly to their homes so parents can avoid extra trips to the grocery store, extra money spent on food and extra time planning meals.
The enrollment window end May 20 and meals will begin to be delivered 2 weeks after.
Elsewhere in the meeting, Shelton announced graduation dates for the School System‘s three high schools.
Dallas County High School will hold a drive-in graduation ceremony on Friday, June 12 in the Valley Grande Baptist Church parking lot.
Southside High School will have a limited capacity ceremony at the school’s football field on Wednesday, June 17.
Keith High School will have also have a limited capacity ceremony at the school’s football field on Friday, June 19.
Shelton said the times for each of the school’s ceremonies have yet to be determined but will be announced soon.
“I think it’s important out students are celebrated,” said Shelton. “Many of them were disappointed that they wouldn’t have a ceremony at all.”
Finally, Shelton announced that Valley Grande Elementary School Principal Erika Crumb will be leaving her current position to take the job as principal at Dallas County High School.
