Vaughan Regional Medical Center (VRMC) welcomed two new health care centers to Medical Center Parkway on Friday afternoon with a ribbon cutting ceremony: Cancer Care Center Selma and Tuscaloosa Urology.

VRMC CEO David McCormac began the occasion by greeting all of the facilities new physicians and thanking them for their investment in the community.

“We want to thank this group for investing in our community,” said McCormac. “This service line is probably one of the most important service lines in a lot of people’s lives. Everyone has been effected by cancer in one way or the other.”

Prior to Cancer Care Center Selma, McCormac said the community was “at a loss” in terms of cancer treatment.

“We had no serves here in our community and that covers a very large area,” he said. “And our community covers a very large area and a lot of people aren’t able to travel. We’re very fortunate their goal is to reach out and serve underserved areas because we are certainly an underserved area.”

According to McCormac, the Cancer Care Center represents a $4 million investment in the community.

“That’s the largest invest we’ve had in quite a while,” he said. “That’s exciting but the more exciting thing is that people will be getting service that they did not get.”

Cancer Care Center Selma Radiation Oncologist Dr. Shelby Sanford also emphasized how beneficial it will be for the community to also access to cancer treatment locally.

“The lifeblood of a community the survival its local hospital,” he said. “And so many networks come to your town and take your patients and treat them somewhere else and generate revenue somewhere else. Our mantra has always been is to do everything we can here and to help our local hospital survive and thrive because without it, the community dies.”
