The American Red Cross, which has had disaster responders on the ground in Alabama since a rash of severe weather caused widespread devastation on Wednesday, March 17, recently released a recovery update detailing its work in several counties across the state.

“Every disaster is different, and so are the needs of each affected community and family,” the update stated. “In the current COVID-19 environment, we continue to work with local partners to create plans and coordinate recovery services to ensure people get the help they need to get back on their feet, while safely adhering to the recommendations of public health officials.”

The American Red Cross was on hand in Dallas County last week for a blood drive in partnership with two local churches, but has also set up mobile food and emergency supply distribution sites in Bibb, Calhoun, Cherokee, Chilton, Clay, Hale, Jefferson, Perry, Pickens, Randolph, Shelby, St. Clair and Tuscaloosa counties.

According to the update, damage assessments in the impacted areas are 80 percent complete and early estimates indicate that almost 400 homes have sustained major damage or were completely destroyed.

The update noted that 75 Red Cross workers are on the ground in Alabama providing relief and support and the organization is providing temporary lodging in hotels to more than 80 Alabamians.

So far, the organization has connected more than 110 callers with assistance and resources.

“The safety of our disaster workforce and the people we serve is our priority,” the update stated. “We are working closely with local officials to identify community needs and the extent of damages so that we may be able to provide support to those affected.”
