Vernetta Perkins is now part of history in Dallas County.

Perkins will be sworn in as the first female Dallas County District Court Judge on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at the Selma High School Auditorium.

Governor Kay Ivey appointed Perkins last month as the successor to Bob Armstrong, who retired in October after 17 years holding the position.

A Selma native, Perkins said she accepts the judicial position with grace and class. She plans to run for election next spring.

“It is with great humility, and honor that I accept this position and work to serve the people of Dallas county with fairness and integrity,” Perkins said. “To be part of shattering the glass ceiling for women in our county is a big moment for us all.  I know that I stand on the shoulders of the women who came before me, yet were not afforded the opportunity to share their wisdom, talents and gifts.”

Perkins said that Armstrong offered his support, saying he’s only a phone call away for advice and wisdom.

Perkins said she’s honored to become part of history in Dallas County.

“I deeply understand the magnitude of our history while appreciating the present and future possibilities of what we can become,” Perkins said. “I appreciate the faith and support from Governor Ivey and my family, but most of all; I am grateful to God for seeing fit to use me as a tool for justice and equity in our community. I stand ready to serve.”

Perkins has an impressive  portfolio. Perkins is a product of the Selma City School system and Alumane of Spelman College and the University of Alabama School of Law. She is a 22 year veteran member of the Alabama Bar Association, having served as Assistant District Attorney for over 14 years and General Counsel for Montgomery Public Schools.
