A State Senator is among the candidates running for Governor in Alabama.
District 23 State Senator Malika Sanders-Fortier is among five Democratic candidates running with hopes to unseat incumbent Kay Ivey (R-AL).
Sanders-Fortier, who decided not to run for a second term as State Senator, will face competition on the Democratic side: Yolanda Rochelle Flowers, Patricia Salter Jamieson, Arthur Kennedy and Chad “Chig” Martin.
They qualified before last Friday’s deadline for the Alabama Democratic Party candidates.
Eight candidates are on the Republican side: Lindy Blanchard, Lew Burdette, Stacy Lee George, Tim James, Donald Trent Jones, Dean Olde, Dave Thomas and Dean Young.
Ivey is seeking a second-term as Governor and also filled out the remaining term after Ray Bentley resigned.
Sanders-Fortier has not spoke about her run for Governor either publicly nor on social media.
Sanders-Fortier, is the daughter of former State Senator Hank Sanders.
The Primary election will be held on May 24. If a runoff is needed, the election will be held on June 21.
