Yes, we are rapidly approaching the official start of spring. I say this even as we are reeling from sub-freezing temperatures over the weekend. Yikes. Hopefully, the weather warms up a bit so that we can enjoy an amazing spring break. In preparation for the coming weeks, it’s a great time for a few spring reminders.
First and foremost, we have our regularly scheduled remote learning day on Friday March 18 and spring break is the week of March 21. All schools and offices are closed during the week and I encourage our teachers, leaders and staff to find some time for self-care and wellness so that we can come back refreshed and ready to support our scholars during the last couple of months of school.
That said, when we return, scholars will be preparing for our annual spring testing. The pandemic has disrupted spring testing for the last two years. This year, we are ready to move forward. Testing begins the week of April 4. As always, your child’s school can provide you the best and most up to date information on the daily schedule during testing week.
We are also excited to have prom, awards programs and graduation in the coming months. Our scholars deserve to be celebrated! Specific times and dates are being determined now and we will also share opportunities for community partnerships during these events.
As we round out the school year, we will begin enrolling for summer learning. Like last year, we will offer opportunities for enrichment and intervention. We also look forward to offering scholars opportunities to earn high school credits and to participate in credit recovery.
Yes, spring is in the air and there is much activity to share. We will keep you updated as always.
I am happy to report that our Covid-19 numbers have dropped to the point that we now go weeks without any positive cases. I do attribute this to our continuation of safe and healthy practices. Let’s keep it up so that we have a fun final quarter of the school year.
Vaccinations are encouraged and there are many opportunities to get that shot in the arm. That continues to be our best mitigating factor to decrease positivity rates and also reduce the severity of symptoms.
Please check out our social media and website for Covid-19 testing and vaccination clinics. We will also continue to update our reporting dashboard in the event that we have any positive cases. Stay tuned for additional routine updates and please reach out if you have suggestions or needs. For now, I encourage you to continue to engage in our “Doing Our Part Everyday” campaign. Stay safe and be DOPE.
In other news, if you are interested in working as a social worker, substitute teacher, security officer or bus driver, we may have a job for you. We are also hiring for summer learning vacancies and for teacher positions for the upcoming school year. Interest has been high so please apply soon. Our human resources team will be glad to share more details about these positions and other vacancies. We are excited to say that our team members are paid well above the average salary of surrounding school districts. Come be a part of Team Selma!
I will take a couple of weeks off from writing to enjoy spring break and look forward to writing again early next month. Thanks for the supporting Team Selma and please reach out to me at avis.williams@selmacityschools.org if you need anything.
