The Selma Charity League will host the Bloch Park Pawrade on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bloch Park.
The parade will be held on the left side of the park, across from the stadium. The Selma Charity League requests those who wish to participate to bring a $5 donation or pet food for the Selma Animal Shelter.
League President Kimberly Levins said the event is part of a monthly initiative by the league to spotlight a charity in the Selma-Dallas County area while also using locations within the city and county limits.
“Bloch Park is a place that in centrally-located, and it’s a good place to have in our community,” she said. “We do try to support places like that and use them when we can. It’s supporting and benefiting the Selma Animal Shelter, so we’re benefiting two places within the community.”
Levins added the event serves as an opportunity for people in the community who didn’t travel for spring break.
“It’s supposed to be beautiful this weekend,” she said. “I’m one of those that stayed in town during spring break, so I’m looking forward to getting to do something outside that does support the animal shelter and is local.”
Participants in the parade are permitted to bring their animals provided they are on a leash or in a cage. Levins said all animals are welcome as long as the participants meet those prerequisites.
“I’m interested to see them,” Levins said. “I’m hopeful that we’ll have some different, interesting animals. We’re trying to appeal to everyone.”
Levins said costumes are encouraged for the pets.
“We haven’t decided completely about who will judge, but if there are enough animals dressed up in costumes, we’ll try to pick winners,” she said.
Levins added spectators are welcome to watch the parade and may set quilts or chairs in the grass.
League member Ann Kennedy said people may bring their own snacks and water to the event.
