Fashion on the River will showcase a history of Black Fashion Saturday at the Walton Theater.
The ‘Black to the Future’ show, operated by Aisha Smith, will start at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m. The FOTR show began seven years ago, but will be its first since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Models and designers participating in the show are locally and across the state: Selma, Marion, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, Bessemer and Birmingham.
Smith, a Selma native, said the timing was perfect to do a black history fashion show.
“I come up with a different theme every year,” Smith said. “Since we just celebrated Juneteenth, I wanted to give a show about fashion of Black History.”
Here are designers and their town:
-Turning Heads Boutiq featuring Jeslen’s Collection, Selma.
-The Pavilion Boutique, Selma.
-KD Bridal & Formalwear, Selma .
-Distinctly Different, Marion.
-Simply Elegant, Montgomery .
Pash The Brand, Montgomery
-Shapely Louise , Birmingham.
-Heru Collection, Bessemer.
-Gym Kyngs, Tuscaloosa.
E and B Janitorial Services sponsored the event for the last two years.
Smith explains her approach to the FOTR show.
“I do this to highlight all of the local businesses and designers and also to give Selma a positive event where they can dress up and come out among their family friends and neighbors,” Smith said.
“I highlight a different venue each year and I hope to visit them all. I am already planning for the next one.”
