Members of the Selma-Dallas County  Kiwanis Club welcomed back Selma City School students on Monday across the city.

Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum, Selma City Councilman Michael Johnson, Timfreit Drane, and Corey Bowie were at Clark Elementary School on Monday.

Kiwanis members Mark Neely, Selma Councilwomen Christie Thomas, Jannie Thomas, Gabriel Brown and Angela Benjamin were at RB Hudson Steam Academy and Selma High School.

The 100 Black Men Selma, Inc., the Delta Pi Lamda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,Inc also participated.

Bowie, a former Selma City Council President, said it is important to greet the students on day one. His sister, Constance Bowie, is a fourth-grade teacher at Clark Elementary.

“We wanted to welcome back the students and we want them to have a good year of school,” Bowie said.

Johnson said  he was glad to see another school year start

“I’m happy and excited to have the kids back,” Johnson said. “Getting an education is very important.”

Drane also stressed the importance of school.

“At this day and time, these kids need all the support they can get,” Drane said.

Granthum, who was recently re-elected,  said its all about supporting the schools.

“We’re here to welcome them back in school and be there if they need something,” Granthum said.

Selma City Council President Billy Young  said  it was important to get the school year off right.”
