A Mobile County man died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on Sunday.
Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum and Selma Police Chief Kenta Fulford both confirmed that Isaiah Guy Deweever, 33,”took his own life” on Sunday in the parking lot of the Valley Grande Baptist Church.
Fulford said that Selma Police Department officers responded to Baymont Inn around 11:59 a.m. Sunday in reference to a gunshot victim. Upon arrival, Fulford said that Kerry Dudley, 29, was shot multiple times. Fulford said that the suspect fled in a Green Honda.
Granthum said that the SPD gave the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office a description of the vehicle. The DCSO located the vehicle in the parking lot of Valley Grande Baptist Church. Granthum said that the deputies, SPD and ALEA officers noticed an African-American was in the car carrying a pistol. Granthum said he wasn’t pointing the pistol at the deputies, but waving it around.
The deputies backed away. Granthum said that the deputies heard a pop and when they returned to the vehicle, the suspect shot himself in the chest. Granthum called it a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
Granthum said that Deweever’s body is taken to forensics for examination.
“It’s a bad situation,” Granthum said.
Fulford said that the victim is in stable condition.
The incident remains under investigation by the SPD.
Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson said he expects the SPD and DCSO will find out what happened.
“We are praying that the victim lives and law enforcement can get to the bottom of what this was all about,” Jackson said.
