The Selma-Dallas County Emancipation Proclamation Committee gave Selma University a f $3,000 donation as part of National HBCU month on Friday.
Annually observed on January 1, the Committee awards scholarships to local institutions of higher learning to perpetuate the intent of the founders to promote the significance and availability of education for citizens of African descent.
President Melvin Flanagan-Brown presented the check to Selma University President Dr. Stanford Angion on campus..
“The funds come at a wonderful time,” Angion said. “We are in the new year and it’s always good to end the year strong. So this helps us to end the year strong. When we get near the end of the year, most of the donations start to dry up a little bit. This is a great help. It will help us continue to provide scholarships for students coming in the spring semester as well as make some school improvements that are needed.”
