A Selma High School student died Tuesday at the school and three other students were taken to the hospital.
According to Selma Police Captain Natasha Fowlkes, the death investigation victim is a 16-year-old. Because the victim is a minor, their identity cannot be revealed.
“As a community, we are deeply saddened by the death of this young scholar,” Selma City Schools Superintendent Zickeyous Byrd said. “We ask for prayers for the young man’s family, the faculty, staff, and students of Selma High School as we all continue to grieve. This is such a shock for our Saints Nation family.”
Law enforcement from the Selma Police Department and Dallas County Sheriff’s Office were called to Selma High campus around noon.
Fowlkes and Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson both confirmed that the victim’s body will be taken to Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences to determine the exact cause of death and the manner of death.
“It’s a very sad situation for the victim and their family,” Jackson said.
The incident remains under investigation by the SPD and the State Bureau of Investigation.
Selma’s City government and the Selma City School District are working together to offer the community additional resources.
