The Morgan Academy 4-6th grade boys recently won the AISA Pee-wee basketball tournament championship last weekend.
The team went a perfect 4-0 in the tournament, beating Hooper Academy 46-9, Lee Scott Academy 41-25, Fort Dale Academy 41-26 and Lee Scott 44-27 in the championship game.
Leading the way for the young Senators was Ryder Hughey averaging 9 points per game, Pope Roberts and Lane Osborn at 8 points and Foster Jones with 7 points.
According to head coach James Roberts, the Senators depth and athleticism was a key to victory. “I knew our team would probably be the most athletic; what we lack in size we make up for in speed, so a couple of weeks ago we started working on a full court press defense in practice,” Roberts said. “We rotated from a man press to a 2-2-1 press and it really created havoc for the other teams, being we had such a great bench we were able to substitute frequently which in turn helped everyone stay fresh.”
Roberts said the team got key contributions from Hayes Moore, Lance Ward, Goodwin Alsobrook, Mason Lowe and Holden Osborn as part of their rotation.
Ryder Hughey, Pope Roberts, Lane Osborn, Foster Jones, Hayes Moore, Lance Ward, Goodwin Alsobrook, Mason Lowe, Holden Osborn, BJ Wooten, Jude Jones and Rylie Irwin are the team members.
