Rep. Prince Chestnut hosted community cookout at Selma University

The National Black Caucus sponsored a community cookout on Saturday at Selma University.

Backpacks were given out to the kids, along with soaps, toothpaste donated from Alabama State University.  Hot dogs and hamburgers were also served.

The event was hosted by Rep. Prince Chestnut, who called the event important for Selma and Dallas County.

“Having this event means a lot,” Chestnut said. “It gives me an opportunity to give back to the community.”

Senator Merika Coleman, chair of the Alabama Legislative Black Caucus, said she was honored to assist Selma recover from the  tornado devastation.

“The ALBC is the heart of the legislature,” Coleman said. “We fight for legislation that helps th least of those. That’s why it was important for us to help the people of Selma impacted by the tornado and what better time to do that than the Jubilee.”

Selma City Councilwomen Christie Thomas and Jannie Thomas also attended the event.
