Dr. Sunmi Oyesiku was the guest speaker at the Selma Rotary Club on Monday.
Oyesiku discussed working as the Medical Director at Rural Health Medical Program Inc – Selma & Marion Health Centers and Our Community Doc, an organization that she founded.
Known as Dr. O., Oyesiku unveiled her vision for improving the quality of life in the Queen City.
“I am promoting healthy living in Selma,” Oyesiku said. “Obesity, diabetes and hypertension are serious health issues. My hope is healthier Southern nutrition & active lifestyle practices to combat obesity and other chronic medical medications.”
Oyesiku, a Nigeria native, initially came to Selma for family residency with UAB Selma Family Medicine in 2018. After the residency ended, she stayed in Selma and was hired by Rural Health.
“Selma is a growing community with a lot of issues, poverty and obesity,” Oyesiku said. “That’s why it was a choice for me to stay. I got here by chance, but I stayed by choice. I thank God for that.”
Oyesiku said the goal for Our Community Doc is changing the lifestyle of Selma and Dallas County residents into a healthier one.
