A company in Texas donated a check to the Friends of the Vaughan Smitherman Museum last month.
The Community Relation Division of Rent A Center Corporation based in Plano, Texas donated a $10,000 check to the Friends of the Vaughan Smitherman Museum.
The check was presented to board members by Robert Montgomery, District Manager, and Rodney Holman, Selma Manager.
Anna Speir, a board member, said they appreciate the donation. Spier said that the funds will be used for repair of areas suffering damage from recent storms. A tornado hit the Queen City on January 12.
The donation also will be used to create a display of the role of African Americans in the history of Selma and the period following the Civil War.
During those historic days, the Vaughan Smitherman building was used as the first freedman’s hospital in Dallas County.
Spier said that the plan is to upgrade the present exhibit ,featuring the history of the Good Samaritan Hospital.
