In an effort to maintain Selma’s water supply, the Water Works and Sewer Board has invoked part of the city’s Water Conversation Plan.

Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr., City Councilwoman Christie Thomas and Robert Bridges of the Selma Water Works plant made the announcement at a press conference at the Selma Water Works office on Friday.

“We hope there will be no need to implement more steps of the Water Conservation plan in the future,” Perkins said.

The plan ensures all water customers within the water service area have sufficient potable water for consumer consumption. Because of the current high water temperatures and drought conditions, the Water Works and Sewer Board and the City will be restricting outdoor irrigation use at homes and businesses to Tuesdays and Saturdays only for each week throughout the entire system.

The plan will remain in effect until the water shortage threat has decreased. Perkins and Bridges said this will allow for recovery in the water works maintain supply for firefighting and main water breaks.

Perkins said this has happened before, in 2006 and 2007.

According to the Emergency Water Conservation plan for the Selma City Water Works, penalties are:

-First offense, written notice of violation.

-Second offense, written notice of violation. assessed 40% penalty of their water bill and stated amount.

-Third offense, customer will have flowing device on their meter, $50 charge, $80 after hours
