For the first time this year, the Evans Special Needs Golf Tournament will be without its founder.

The tournament, founded by former Selma Mayor George Evans, will be held on Oct. 18 at the Valley Grande Golf Course. The tournament, entering its 13th year, benefits special needs children in Cahaba Mental Health, Dallas County Schools, and Selma City Schools.

Patrick Evans addressed the Selma City Council Tuesday on behalf of the tournament and in memory of his father, who died May 15.  Mayor Evans’ widow, Jeannie Evans, also attended the city council meeting.

Evans wanted to know if the city council would make its annual donation to the tournament.

City Council President Billy Young said the city council would take up a discretionary fund at the next meeting later this month.

“We gave a good donation last year and we’ll do better this year,” Young said.

The entire city council was present at the meeting, including Young, council members Christie Thomas, Jannie Thomas, Troy Harvill, Atkin Jemison, Sam Randolph, Lesia James, Michael Johnson and Clay Carmichael.
