The Dallas County Commission passed the county’s budget for the 2024 fiscal year.
Dallas County Administrator Barbara Harrell presented the $31.7 million budget to the Commission: Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn, Commissioners Jan Justice, Vivian Rogers, Curtis Williams and Connell Towns at the Commission meeting on Monday.
The Fiscal year begins on Oct. 1 and ends Sept. 30, 2024.
“It’s a big budget at $31.7 million,” Dallas County Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn said. “That’s a lot of money coming into Dallas County and a lot of money going out. That’s a lot of income coming into Dallas County.”
The Dallas County budget is a slight decrease from $33.5 million in the 2023 Fiscal Year.
The breakdown of the budget includes $16.9 million in the general fund, $8.1 million allocated for the engineering/road department, and $6.7 million for other funds.
Every county employee will get a 5% across-the-board increase, a $600 employee bonus in November, and an additional $2 per hour from the Coronavirus American Rescue Fund. Part-timers will get $200.
Harrell worked with the Commission on the budget, which Nunn said he appreciated.
“I thank Barbara Harrell for her work on the budget,” Nunn said. “I thank the Commissioners for what they have done. We worked together.”
Nunn said getting a balanced budget was impressive, especially since parts of Dallas County was hit by a tornado on Jan. 12.
“We’ve had a lot of repairs to our buildings from the tornado in January,” Nunn said. “I have faith in our Commissioners, Department heads and Attorney John Kelly that we will make it through next year.”
