A few weeks ago, I preached a sermon called “The 80/20 Rule.” I shared with the congregation a story about a middle-aged man who had been married for 27 years and had three children.
He said most of the time, life was pretty good. He and his wife had great jobs, the kids did great, and everything was wonderful about 80% of the time.
However, he went on to say that he struggled with the remaining 20%. The arguing, aggravation, and worries sometimes became too much, and he wanted to throw it all away because of that 20%.
We all have times of trouble, but we can’t let that overshadow all the goodness God has blessed us with. It’s easy to get caught up in negativity and be consumed with thoughts and emotions that make us forget about the 80%.
This attitude will rob people of their life, love, joy, and fulfillment. We have the power to make a choice, a choice to focus on the blessings of God. When we shift our focus, we can see the bigger picture and are reminded that we are truly blessed.
Life will not always be smooth sailing. The 20% may be filled with disappointment, arguments, and worries, but it’s also an opportunity for growth, learning, and trusting in God that we are not alone, no matter what comes our way.
In the words of Jesus “In this world you will have trouble, but be encouraged, for I have overcome the world!” Gospel of John 16:33
