Beatriz Williams discussed her journey to becoming a New York Times best-selling author at the Selma-Dallas County Public Library on Wednesday.
Williams, who was selling her latest novel, “The Beach at Summerly,” said it was not a easy process and had to make difficult decisions.
“The business career was just a job,” Williams admitted. “I knew going into a second career would be tough.”
As Williams settled into full-time motherhood, she found opportunity to begin a writing career. She and her husband, Sydney Williams, have four children and live in Greenwich, Conn.
“It was important job being a mother,” Williams said. “My kids give me so much perspective.”
Williams, who writes historical fiction, said she harbored dreams of writing as a child growing up in the Seattle suburbs.
“I was enormously fortunate to have parents who taught and encouraged me to read from a very young ago, and spent most of their very limited leisure budget on books, opera tickets, and annual family vacations to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival,” Williams said.
