Colonel Butler spoke at Veterans Day program

Col. Dewana Butler was the guest speaker at the American Legion Post 20 Veterans Day program on Saturday morning at Memorial Stadium.
Under light rain, veterans and their families from all branches of the U.S. military attended.
“I joined the military to get money for college,” Butler said. “I was supposed to be one and done, but military service is a calling.”
Butler shared her impressive resume which included deployment to Afghanistan and serving as the Supply and Services Officer for Joint Sustainment Command-Afghanistan.
Butler began her military career as an active-duty Chemical Officer assigned to the 18th Aviation Brigade.
Jonathan Brown who served as the program’s Master of Ceremonies, joked about being Butler’s favorite military person. Butler responded to Brown, saying “We’ll discuss this after the program.”
Selma City Council members Billy Young, Clay Carmichael, and Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum attended the event.
The Southside JROTC presented colors and members of the Southside High Choir sang.
The Selma Rotary Club served meals after the event.
