A student group from R.B. Hudson’s STEAM Academy donated items to the Winston Williams Homeless Shelter on Feb. 16.

The ThriveWay Peer Helpers, a group of seventh and eighth grade students, donated laundry detergent and $135 to the homeless shelter. Students said they were motivated to help improve conditions in the community, fitting their motto, “Be the Good. Show the way. Lend a Hand.’’

Students took a tour of the shelter run by Gospel Tabernacle Pastor John Grayson, which is open daily from 7 p.m. to 7a.m. Grayson said he was grateful for the kids volunteering their services.

“The kids were excited that the newspaper was coming by to see their donation to the shelter,” Grayson said. 

Guiding the students at R.B. Hudson are education specialist Mariama De Ramus and assistant principal Dr. Kesia Smith. DeRamus sponsored a homeless fundraiser for the students. Smith, a member of Gospel Tabernacle, partly runs the shelter. R.B. Hudson Principal Dr. Ken Hamilton, supported the students.

“Students were excited to learn more about the shelter and the different ministries of Selma,” Smith said.

Councilman Clay Carmichael purchased a washer and dryer for the shelter. Carmichael said he was just trying to lend a hand.
