Historic Brown Chapel AME Church recently received a $250,000 check from an anonymous donor Feb. 29.

“Hallelujah, that $250,000 is a recognition of the courageous and faithful service that was provided then and that continues to be provided by Brown Chapel AME church in this community,” Strong said.

Brown Chapel member Bruce L .Holmes Sr. said that he wrote 42 letters on Oct. 10 to famous celebrities seeking donations to improve conditions at the church. Holmes said his first response came on Nov. 17, followed by a check.

“The donor asked to remain anonymous,” Holmes said.” We have a great leader and Pastor Leodis Strong.”

Kristen Clarke, U.S.  Assistant Attorney General, spoke at Brown Chapel on March 3, saying she respects the church’s history during the Civil Rights era.
