Boone Newsmedia, Inc., has appointed Brent Maze as the publisher of The Selma Times-Journal and The Demopolis Times.
Maze lives in Selma and comes to the area after serving as the publisher of The Newton County Appeal in Union, Mississippi, from 2015 to 2024. He said he is grateful for the opportunity to serve the community in this important role.
“Selma has a rich history, and The Selma Times-Journal has been a major part of that history,” Maze said. “It is an honor to continue in the footsteps of those who have come before me to serve the role of recording history in the making. I am thrilled to be here and look forward to meeting each of you and serving as publisher of your newspaper.”
Maze, a native of Kimberly, is no stranger to the Boone Newsmedia family. He has served in various roles from 2006 to 2015, including serving as managing editor of Clanton Advertiser, The Alexander City Outlook, Dadeville Record and Hartselle Enquirer during that tenure. He also served as sports editor of the Leeds News from 2003 to 2006, rounding out his nearly 21-year career in journalism. He studied at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
Maze has won numerous individual awards and has been a part of other staff awards in both the Alabama Press Association and Mississippi Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contests. While he has enjoyed serving in Mississippi, he is excited to be back in his home state.
“Alabama is home to me,” Maze said. “This is where I cut my teeth as a young reporter. I love being back here and covering the news and events of my home state.”
Maze said he always welcomes input from the community, from submitted story ideas and news items to feedback about how well publications are covering community news.
“My door is always open to you,” Maze said. “If you have an issue we need to discuss or you have an idea for something we should cover, please feel free to get in touch with me. You may call me, visit me, email me or talk with me when you see me out in the community. It is my goal that The Selma Times-Journal be your trusted source of information.
“Thank you in advance for your thoughts and prayers along with your support by being a subscriber, reader, advertiser or follower on social media. Without your support, we would not be able to do what we do.”
Maze assumes the oversight of The Selma Times-Journal and The Demopolis Times from Regional Editor Lanell Downs Smith, who will focus her efforts on the Boone Newsmedia publications produced by Greenville Newspapers, Inc. — The Greenville Advocate, The Lowndes Signal and The Luverne Journal.
“I am honored to work alongside Brent as he refines The Selma Times-Journal and The Demopolis Times’ coverage of our communities,” Smith said. “He brings skills and experience, which will be an asset to our publications as well as a deep appreciation for the people and places important to Dallas and Marengo Counties. I am deeply grateful to have served our readers and am looking forward to all Brent brings to our team.”
Maze works out of The Selma Times-Journal office located on the second floor at 1018 Water Avenue in downtown Selma. He can be reached by phone at (334) 875-2110 or by email at brent.maze@selmatimesjournal.com. He can also be reached on X formerly known as Twitter at @bmaze.
