Asking college students to give up their spring break for an educational trip is a difficult task.

But 11 students from Sewanee: The University of the South are spending this entire week, March 18-22, in Selma.

We applaud the Sewanee students, Cherry Nagy, Eleora Ephrem, Trinity Reddic, Yazmine Ali, Tom Walker, Daphne Nwohike, Erick Algeria, Giloy Dada and Kimberly Mackrella with the Rev. Kris Paul and advisor Travis Parker The group volunteered in the city and attended several events. The University of South is located in Sewanee, Tennessee.

What impressed us the most was the students embraced Selma’s rich history which includes “Bloody Sunday” and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. 

“To me, the trip meant we got to see a historic town rather than read about it in the history books,” Ephrem said. 

We are hoping more college students take the same approach Sewanee students did in the future.
