A man was injured in a collision involving a white passenger car and a Norfolk-Southern train at the Union Street crossing Monday night.
Selma Police Sgt. Gerral Pinkston said the passenger car was attempting to cross the train tracks on Union Street when it was struck by a westbound train.
“One person was injured,” Pinkston said. “We won’t know the severity of the injuries until he is evaluated at the hospital.”
The driver was the only person in the vehicle, and he was transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center. Neither his condition nor his identity was known Monday night.
The train came to a stop just east of the Boynton Street crossing. It was blocking Broad Street Monday night, causing motorists to detour around the wreck scene.
According to officials on the scene, the train was likely not going faster than 15 mph. None of the crew members were injured in the crash.
The Union Street crossing does not have lights or gates. There are only crossbucks indicating the crossing.
