George Robert “Bert” Beers, IV passed away April 16 at the age of 54. He was born October 11, 1969 in Selma.
After graduating from John T. Morgan Academy, he completed his education at the University of Alabama. A lifelong accomplished and avid golfer, he attended Alabama on a golf scholarship, after having received scholarship offers from numerous other Division I schools. At Alabama, Bert was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity and cherished his friendships with countless fraternity brothers. He was also a talented musician and loved singing and playing guitar, especially serving numerous times as worship leader for the Central Alabama Walk to Emmaus. Bert was a gifted salesman and enjoyed a career in sales, finding a passion in serving homeowners through the mortgage lending business. Most of all, with an infectious personality and love for life, Bert was a wonderful friend and never met a stranger.
Bert also served his country as a member of the Alabama Army National Guard and was honorably discharged after having served in Saudi Arabia in Operation Desert Storm.
Bert was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church and also regularly worshipped at Blue Jean Church in Selma, Alabama.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, George Robert Beers, Jr. and Evelyn Poe Beers, and Ernest F. Randall and Elsie Faircloth Randall.
He is survived by his parents, George Robert Beers, III and Joy Randall Beers; siblings, Randall Clay (Alicia Keith) Beers and Rebecca A. Beers; nieces and nephews, Robert Cobb Beers, Randall Clay Beers, Jr., Frances McMillan Beers, and Martha Ann Beers; and many other beloved family members, including Avery Griffin and Caleb Dunaway.
Funeral services will be April 19 at noon. at Church Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Diane Everette and Rev. Bob Armstrong officiating. Interment will follow at New Live Oak Cemetery with Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home of Selma directing. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 11 a.m., prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Brad Kittrell, Reid McMilion, Joe Alan Sexton, Rick Williams, Lee Youngblood, Craig Perloff, Norman Winston, and Roger Mitchell.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB; 1720 2nd Avenue South Birmingham, AL 35294-3300.
