Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

I love my mom.

Most everyone says that they have the best mom, but I think my Mom is the best.

I am so thankful for every day that we’ve been able to spend together. It’s been a true blessing to have her with me all of my life. Many people only get a few days or years with their mom. Any time we get to share with our parents is precious, but to be able to share 43 years with her is just a blessing from God.

Sometimes, I find myself acting like her in some ways. Usually, that’s a good thing.

I really do have two great parents who raised me and have been there to help me along the way. I know others have not been blessed to have that type of support for one reason or another.

My mom’s love is something I’ve felt all the way along, even in the times I’ve messed up or done things I’m ashamed of. She’s never been judgmental, but she always wants me to do the right thing.

She’s taught me that actions speak louder than words. I try not to make promises I can’t keep, and if I do love and respect you, I try to show that more than saying it. I don’t want my word to become meaningless. When I mess up, you own up to it and try to make it right.

My Mom will also go above and beyond what you ask her to do. If you need help in the kitchen, she will do what you ask and more.

She’s also taught me patience. Sure, she wants stuff done when she has it on her mind. Who doesn’t? But to be able to be a teacher for nearly 25 years in Birmingham City Schools, she had to have a lot of patience and compassion for her students.

She also had a lot of patience two years ago when I was recovering from a serious car crash. We had many chances to talk and spend time together. I will cherish those times.

As you can tell, she’s had a big impact on my life, along with the impact she’s had on my brother and sister and their families.

Many of you still have your mothers with us. Some of you will be remembering your mothers today.

If you can, take time to give your mom and big hug. For those who aren’t as fortunate today, I hope the memories of them will comfort you.

For all of the moms out there, Happy Mother’s Day! I hope it’s a special day for you.
