Earlier this week, the Selma City Council decided to reinstate Police Chief Kenta Fulford after a lengthy executive session lasting more than six hours.
While we would have liked to have seen the meeting be held in the open, we understand that the Alabama Open Meetings Act gives the council the right to conduct these types of hearings behind closed doors. If job performance was the only thing discussed, then that should be held in the open in accordance with the act, but if it’s questions about his general reputation, then that’s another issue.
That being said, we have to move on from here. What we hope the city will do going forward is that all parties will work together to help improve the city’s public safety issues. That’s by providing the police department the support (financially and instilling confidence in the officers) they need to do the job residents have come to expect.
There are no quick fixes, but all we can do is work together to make each day better than the previous day. If we can do that, many of the issues will take care of themselves.
