Reducing the nine council seats was a main topic at the Selma City Council work session on Thursday night.
City Councilman Clay Carmichael proposed a city manager style of government, reducing it to five or six districts. Councilman Sam Randolph questioned the motive of Carmichael’s proposal and disagreed.
The City of Selma is split into eight wards. Council members are over the following Wards: Troy Harvill (Ward 1), Christie Thomas (Ward 2), Clay Carmichael (Ward 3), Lesia James (Ward 4), Sam Randolph (Ward 5), Atkin Jemison (Ward 6), Jannie Thomas (Ward 7) and Michael Johnson (Ward 8). Council President Billy Young is elected at large.
Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. had a similar discussion at a council meeting earlier this summer.
In other work session business:
- Carmichael questioned Jasmine Robinson, Perkins’ Administrative Assistant, on the need to have IT be involved with the security cameras. Robinson said IT was a key part of the installation.
- Treasurer Terri Barnes-Smith was present and said an auditor’s report will occur at Tuesday’s city council meeting.
- The city council plans to vote on the Mayor’s request for an attorney for himself and Barnes-Smith.
Council members present at the meeting were: President Billy Young, council members Jannie Thomas, Sam Randolph, Cristie Thomas, Lesia James, Clay Carmichael and Troy Harvill.
