Keith jumped out to a 10-0 lead on the road at Calhoun and then hung on to defeat 10-8 Friday night on the road.

The Bears (0-1) will host Dallas County next Friday night while the Tigers (0-1) will take on Autaugaville next week.

Coach Anthony Lumpkin said the game didn’t turn out like they were expecting to play. However, his senior linebacker-tight end Jarius Sanders stepped up and made plays when they needed them.

“W have to clean up some things, like the mental mistakes like jumping offside on critical downs like  third and short,” Lumpkin said. “Well, 14, I ride him hard. I don’t give him the credit that he deserves. But he’s a standout player, and he’s just been that type for us for the last three years. And, you know, he just stepped up, made a big play for us tonight.

It was Sanders who made the key play in the game, as he caught the lone touchdown for the Bears to give them an 8-0 lead. The conversion made it 8-0. On the next possession, Bears recorded a safety to make it 10-0 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Calhoun’s Keonte Abram scored on a 17-yard run for the touchdown. The two-point conversion cut the lead to 10-8 at halftime, and that’s how the game would end as neither team could break into the end zone.

Part of the reason why Keith couldn’t score was due to the Calhoun defense, especially JaCarrion Peagler who forced and recovered four fumbles.
