Selma opened the 2024 season strong with a 30-20 win over Park Crossing.

The Saints (1-0) will travel to Southside High School (0-0) next week for a rivalry showdown.

The defense set the tone early in the game for the Saints as Kristan Moore intercepted a screen pass from the Thunderbird quarterback and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown. The two point conversion gave Selma an 8-0 lead with 7:54 left in the first quarter.

The Saints never looked back from that point on.

Head coach Leon Day said that play gave the team some confidence early. But the way the Saints were prepared for this game goes back to the summer camp.

“This game was a combination of all the effort they put in from spring to summer,” Day said. “There were a lot of hard working days, a lot of lows, sometimes just didn’t feel like coming. So today was a testament to the perseverance of hanging in there. I’m really proud of them.”

Kamari Duncan scored from three yards to add to the Selma lead. Jarvarius Marks scored the conversion to push the advantage to 16-0 with 56 seconds left in the first quarter.

Samarion Woods scored another rushing touchdown for the Saints. Blaine Scott got in on the action on a pass for 2 from Woods to make it 24-0 in the second quarter at the 8:23 mark.

No more scoring would occur until the third quarter on a Tristan Wall pass to Marks. The try for two failed, but Selma led 30-0.

Park Crossing tried to come back, scoring before the end of the third quarter and twice in the fourth quarter at the 6:31 and 1:24 marks.
