With 1:05 to play in the game, it appeared like Dallas County’s touchdown to go up 15-14 would be enough to stay unbeaten on the season.

Greensboro, however, executed a last-minute drive and scored with nine seconds left on the clock to steal the win from Dallas County in their home opener Friday night.

The Hornets (2-1, 0-1) will travel to Southside (0-2. 0-1), who lost to powerful Thomasville 34-0 on the road, while Greensboro (1-1, 1-0) travels to Hale County.

Head coach Darryl Watts said he was proud of his team’s effort.

“We always speak about adversity and being able to respond positively to adversity, and you saw how we responded,” Ware said. “But we have to be more disciplined. We’ve got a lot of work to do when it comes to the discipline part. I love the fight. I love the will. I love the execution, but we have to be more disciplined, and that starts with me.”

Dallas County took the lead on a touchdown with the extra point. Greensboro answered with a touchdown but missed the PAT, leaving the Hornets with a 7-6 lead at halftime.

No scoring would occur until the 10:08 mark of the fourth quarter, when Greensboro took the lead on a touchdown run. The two-point conversion was good to give the Raiders a 14-7 lead.

After a big defensive stop midway through the fourth quarter, Dallas County chewed up clock and yardage, mostly on the ground. Kenrell Hamilton took the hand-off from Caleb Morgan and raced eight yards for the score with 1:05 to play. After a timeout, Morgan found Michael Hosea all alone in the end zone for the 2 to give the Hornets a 15-14 lead.

However, Greensboro took advantage of a penalty on the kickoff and scored from 18 yards out with nine seconds left.

The Hornets’ final gasp came up empty, as the Hail Mary went incomplete.
