Homecoming was sweet from the Morgan Academy Senators.
Morgan got a nice victory over Hooper Academy on Friday night in Selma with lots of big performances from the Senators leading to the 38-12 win.
Morgan’s defense produced the game’s two biggest plays. Junior Wallis Gilmore returned an interception 30 yards late in the first quarter to put the Senators ahead 14-0.
Then on Hooper’s next possession, Morgan cashed in with another pick-six. Speedie Pernell took an interception back for an 85-yard touchdown, and the Senators tacked on a two-point conversion to lead 22-0.
Hooper managed two touchdown passes in the second quarter, but that was all the Colts could do against the Senators on this homecoming night.
Morgan’s defense was tough all night, allowing only 63 yards rushing, forcing one fumble and intercepting a total of four passes with Walter Gilmore, and Jack Johnson grabbing errant Colt passes.
Morgan’s offense. Meanwhile, rolled up 265 yards on the ground with Jack Johnson and Baron Frazer carrying the load. Johnson finished with 92 yards on 14 carries and Frazer gained 87 yards on 12 carries.
The Senators hope to continue the momentum from the 26-point victory as they return to region play next Friday night. Morgan travels down to Atmore to face Escambia Academy in the first match-up between those two schools in varsity football since 2015. The Cougars are 1-1 in region play, and the Senators are 0-2. So this game will have big playoff implications.
